Sony’s best video game franchise of the last decade is going to become a series. Something very big is coming.
The Amazon Prime Video platform has announced a new series based on the God of War saga , whose last two games are arguably the two best on PlayStation , with permission from The Last of Us saga.
It is paradoxical that Sony is the reference in narrative games , perfect to become series or movies, but until now none had made the leap to the screen, leaving The Witcher or Cyberpunk 2077 ahead.
Luckily the wheel has already started to turn, and it will be unstoppable. The series about The Last of Us trains on January 15 on HBO Max, and Horizon Zero Dawn on Netflix, and a Gran Turismo movie , among others, are also announced. God of War is now coming to Prime Video , according to HobbyConsolas.com.
God of War is a saga of video games that dates back to 2005 on PlayStation 2 and 3. The first titles were hack’n slack with a lot of gore, focused on combat. Everything changed with the 2018 reboot for PlayStation 4 (also on PS5 and PC) developed by Cory Barlog.
The game, simply called God of War, completely changed its style, becoming a role-playing title with a strong narrative focus :
Kratos , the Greek god of war, is no longer a sadistic, unscrupulous killer. He now has a son, Atreus , lives in Midgard, the territory of the Viking gods, and prefers to avoid confrontation. The relationship between father and son is the best of the game, and surely it has an important weight in the series.
God of War was a tremendous critical and sales success. It went on to win more than 1,000 awards, including Best Game of the Year from dozens of publications, also at the Game Awards.
Its follow-up, God of War Ragnarok, came out just a few weeks ago, but it’s already won several awards at recent Game Awards, including Best Screenplay , and is the fastest title to sell 5 million copies in PlayStation history.
God of War, the new Prime Video series
Prime Video ‘s God of War series will executive produce Cory Barlog , the creator of the critically acclaimed reboot, and Rafe Judkins , who also produced The Wheel of Time.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the writers will be Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby , Oscar nominees for the excellent films Children of Men and Iron Man.
Both also have experience in series: they are the creators of the magnificent The Expanse , for Prime Video.
Nothing is known about the actors, but Prime Video already has a candidate who has demonstrated his “skills”, the comedian Joaquin Reyes :
Jokes aside, the cast will be a lot to talk about when it’s announced.
The synopsis of the series has been leaked , and it seems that they are going to recreate the script of the aforementioned 2018 reboot:
“The series follows Kratos, the God of War, who, having exiled himself from his bloody past in ancient Greece, hangs up his arms forever in the Norse kingdom of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos embarks on a perilous journey with his son, from whom he is estranged, to scatter his ashes from the highest peak, his wife’s last wish.
Kratos soon realizes that the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one that will test the bonds between father and son and force Kratos to fight new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
With God of War , Prime Video has a series on its hands that can attract many viewers, and last several seasons. So far he has not achieved his goals with the Wheel of Time or The Rings of Power, but they are not bad series, far from it. At the moment there is no release date for this new epic adventure.
