A whole year to (re)discover Van Gogh

Vincent Van Gogh belongs to that elite of artists who, whatever the year, there will always be an exhibition of his works somewhere in the world.

And we are not referring to the permanent exhibitions of his museum in Amsterdam , but to the main artistic events that this flamenco talent will star in this year.

Three Van Gogh exhibitions in Amsterdam

Of course, this tour of the world cannot begin if it is not from the Van Gogh Museum , which is trying to get ahead after the closure of its doors due to the coronavirus and the economic crisis in its finances.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam will organize three exhibitions, one of them focused on the process of acquiring its heritage

This center has scheduled three temporary exhibitions. One of them is Van Gogh and the olive groves , from June 18 to September 12, which will focus on 15 paintings made of these hundred-year-old trees in the fields of Provence, while he was interned in the Saint-Rémy asylum.

This exhibition will then cross the ocean and run at the Dallas Museum of Art between October 17 and February 6, 2022.Pollard Willow, painting from 1882. Photo Van Gogh Museum

The heritage of the Van Gogh Museum

We return to Amsterdam . In the museum dedicated to the artist, faced with logistical problems due to the pandemic, they decided to organize an exhibition focused on his heritage.

But what is interesting is that the exhibition will focus on how the process of acquiring each work was, not only of the protagonist of the center but of other painters; a chapter that is usually left out of the reviews.

Lastly, this autumn museum is preparing the Van Gogh and the Potato Eaters exhibition , an exhaustive analysis of the only work with group portraits by the painter. The Potato Eaters. Photo Van Gogh Museum

In addition to showing the work completed in 1885, the oil sketches and drawings made by the artist before painting the original will be shown. The dates will be from October 8 to January 16.

Van Gogh’s dialogues

In the US and Europe several exhibitions will be organized where Van Gogh will be the protagonist of interesting dialogues with contemporary artists.

This is the case at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts , which will offer Hockney-Van Gogh: The Joy of Nature from February 21 to June 20 .

These are 50 works by the British David Hockney with 10 by the Post-Impressionist master, which is an update on a similar show organized by the Amsterdam museum in 2019, reports The Art Newspaper.Fields with iris near Arles. Van Gogh Museum

The city loved by Van Gogh

In Arles, where the Dutch artist produced some of his most important masterpieces, Laura Owens & Vincent van Gogh will be presented , where a handful of their works will share spaces with the creations of this Californian artist, renowned for her large-format works.

This exhibition will be organized at the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in this French city, from May 1 to October 31.

At the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio, the show Through the Eyes of Vincent: Van Gogh and His Sources will look at 15 of his works along with 90 by artists who have influenced his work and style.View of Woldgate, by David Hockney. Photo by Richard Schmidt

This exhibition will run from November 12 to February 6, 2022, and will then move to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art in California from February 27 to May 22 of next year.

Preferred site

Van Gogh will have a privileged place in the renovated Kunsthaus in Zurich, the most important museum dedicated to art in Switzerland.

The wing designed by David Chipperfield is scheduled to open on October 9 , where seven paintings will be exhibited in the Emil Bührle gallery and another four in the main room.
