After the calm and rest of the holidays, the return to work is always a moment of relative sadness for some and joy for others who are already bored of “doing nothing”. Normally this return always supposes a time of excessive positivism on the part of the worker since he sees himself with the strength to work and carry out all the projects in the second half of the year.

However, that feeling may be meaningless if what you want is to be productive for many reasons that we are going to talk about throughout the article. Wanting to do everything at once sounds good on paper, but practice can lead to the need for another vacation and what you want is to be constant and productive.

Don’t try to do it all at once

The first big mistake is to believe that after resting from, surely, a well-deserved vacation, you want to go quickly because the rest has been full and we see ourselves with strength. You don’t have to go from 0 to 100 on the first day of work and maybe not even in the first week. Possibly the mailbox is overflowing and all those emails need a premeditated response and not to get by.

The ideal is to have the first two, three days to catch up on everything, be it responding to all those emails, seeing the status of the tasks and studying what has to be done. It goes without saying that surely certain workers are interested in their own vacations, but you have to avoid getting distracted by these things during working hours and leave it for a later leisure time.

Plan, but always as a team

Surely when you go back to work there will be more people from the team or department who are in the same situation. The nerves and stress of wanting to catch up can be a problem as we have detailed in the previous point, but it does not have to. Thanks to digitization there are a large number of tools that will help you plan not only the first days, but also the first month, quarter…

These platforms allow you to make a series of diagrams that you can create as a team to establish short, medium and long-term goals. One tip is to make a Gantt chart. This type of diagram is an evolution of a conventional timeline that will allow you to organize your tasks by week through cards in which you can add the tasks to be carried out and the estimated time that you will spend. Using a Gantt chart template will help both you and your team to get started faster and to be able to modify it with total comfort from your computer without having to meet.

Teamwork is what determines whether a company is doing well or not, so whenever these plans are made, and even more so if it’s after vacation, do them as a team to join forces to achieve business objectives.

Avoid unnecessary meetings

One of the most common ways to waste time is meetings. There are meetings that can be very productive, but it is well known that when a calendar has many, it can have a very negative influence on the productivity of workers, either because they are not interesting meetings or because they are scheduled with just 20-30 minutes of separation between them, which does not allow you to focus on another task and is wasted time.

It is best to plan them to catch up when you return from vacation using proven methods to take advantage of the time in meetings. You can prepare the topics to be discussed in the meeting and establish a period of time for each one, in this way we make sure that it does not take more time than is strictly necessary. It is also interesting to incorporate the figure of the facilitator who will play the role of moderator at all times, giving way to the topics and timing. When you return from vacation, you have to limit the number of daily meetings as much as possible because if you work in sales many clients will want to know updates, but it is best to do very few because first you have to catch up to be able to report with property and avoid the typical “let me look at it and I’ll tell you as soon as possible”, which already means, at least, another meeting.

You have to rest even when you return from vacation. Working 8 hours straight if you can is fine, but taking a five-minute break from time to time is quite positive for the worker’s job performance. The breaks are necessary to prevent us from getting burnout and, above all, to keep our minds fresh in order to work better.
